PURE is currently working with local stakeholders to create a point-of-care US training program at the Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital in southwestern Uganda. This project is being undertaken in conjunction with the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Emergency Department and MGH Center for Global Health. There is broad-based interest and enthusiasm for the upcoming ultrasound training at Mbarara. While there is narrow point-of-care (POC) ultrasound use currently, all department staff and trainees expressed significant interest in developing ultrasound skills and feel it will be of daily diagnostic utility and often life-saving benefit to their patients.

An ultrasound training coordinator who is fellowship trained in both emergency ultrasound and global health will lead the training for a variety of care providers and trainees (in Surgery/Trauma, Internal Medicine, Anesthesia, OB-GYN, etc). The training will be conducted over a 6-month period with the goal of becoming self-sustaining thereafter by identifying and developing a group of ultrasound champions in that will become trainers and leaders in point-of-care ultrasound within the hospital. PURE is providing educational materials and logistic support this coordinator. For more information about this project please contact us at or
